Benefits of funding

What a prop firm offers, how a typical evaluation is structured, and what to weigh before taking one.

What prop firms are

Forex prop firms, short for proprietary trading firms, provide trading capital to individual traders. You join a firm, trade its funds, and share a portion of the profits with it. A trader with limited capital gets access to a larger account and the chance of larger profits.

The evaluation

Most firms grant a funded account only after an evaluation, usually in two steps, each with the same rules.

One common structure asks for an 8 percent profit within 30 days while staying inside two loss limits: a maximum daily loss of 5 percent of the account's equity, and a maximum overall loss of 12 percent. On a 25,000 dollar account that is 1,250 dollars a day and 3,000 dollars overall; on 50,000, 2,500 and 6,000; on 100,000, 5,000 and 12,000; on 200,000, 10,000 and 24,000.

The daily loss is measured on equity: the current equity minus the previous day's closing equity, divided by that closing equity, times 100. The result is your daily drawdown as a percentage.

What the firm looks at

Before funding, the firm reviews how you traded during the evaluation, not only whether you passed:

  • the largest profit in a single trading day, which many firms cap at 20 to 30 percent of the total
  • lot sizes, and whether positions were scaled in or out
  • position sizes before and during news events and around market closures
  • consistency of position size from trade to trade
  • whether and how stop losses were used

Once the review is done the firm decides whether the strategy is adequate for funding and tells you by email.

Weighing it

The upside is capital you did not have and a profit split on it. The cost is the evaluation fee, the rules that stay in force on the funded account, and the fact that a single bad day can end it. Treat the rules as part of the strategy, not as something to remember afterwards.

Keep the rules in front of you

Add the challenge as a playbook in TradeDNA with its profit target, daily loss and overall loss limits. Every trade is then graded against those rules as it closes, the daily and overall drawdown are tracked on the account's own equity, and a breach is flagged the moment it happens rather than in the firm's email.
